Collector's Review

When I first glanced at Ma Qiong's paintings, there was an instant collision of souls, which reminds me of a long-lost innocence. What hits my heart all at once, is her brief descriptions, pure colors, characters, animals, virtual or real, all narrating the story of her experience in a simple way. It was childlike, near and far, like the days when I was a child.

——Quotation from Ma Qiong’s collector

Ma Qiong was born in Shenyang, Liaoning Province in 1980. She graduated from Sichuan Academy of Fine Arts, Oil Painting Department in 2009 with a master's degree.

Ma Qiong started a winding path on the canvas with an oil paint brush. At the other end of the road is the sense of belonging in art that she has been looking for for many years - she only makes work that is "down to earth" and best represents her mood. Her work does not need to be incorporated into any era to form the relationship between styles and images, but instead present a distinct sense of historical context and stages.

After being away from home for a long time, Ma Qiong’s memory of her hometown in Northeast China has gotten fresher with each passing day. "Even if she returns to her hometown, time has taken away the impressions in her memory," Therefore she tries her best to capture the images of these fragments, and fix the memory delicately on the canvas, forming a unique artistic language.

It is interesting to have works with a clear sense of historical context and stages—perhaps the artist’s aspirations remain the same, but the landscape on the way to exploration is always changing. Ma Qiong is always honest and sincere in her pursuit of artistic belonging.

Paul Hume

Paul Hume is a UK born-Singapore based multidisciplinary artist working in drawing, painting, film, composition, writing and digital design. In his visual work he challenges assumptions about the human domination of the planet. He says that, "Creativity runs over the borders between what we think we know and what we don't. This should make us humble, not self-important. Our ability to imagine new things, new products, new cities, new worlds makes us dangerous. We must not forget that fundamentally we are cells and atoms, just like every other living thing on Earth." He continues to use traditional ways of making an image, combined with motion and digital possibilities. He looks forward to meeting you at the exhibition, Enchantment@55
