The Singapore Story - Showcase Art Piece
"The Singapore Story" 5m X 1.5m
The former City Hall and the Supreme Court Building with South facing were significant landmarks (Now renovated to house the National Gallery Singapore). They were the legal and administrative symbols of the country. They are also seen as transitional markers of time when Singapore turned from a colonial settlement into an independent nation. In front of the two imposing structures is the 'Padang' where many of the country's important events took place including the world war two surrender, the First National Day parade and even the annual highly contested inter-school rugby tournament. It was also a place that little boys of all races kicked football together and in earlier days, families went there for picnics. It is a place where the pledge of unity has been taken aloud so many times "... regardless of race, language or religion, to build a democratic society based on justice and equality; so as to achieve happiness, prosperity, and progress for our nation."
The future is for us to choose. Behind us now is the mental and social foundation of our nation. Our accomplishments, history, destiny, memory... it is where we can learn precious lessons from and for the journey ahead of us; as we progress together as a nation.
